With so many vacuum cleaners on the market today how can a consumer know what one to buy for house cleaning purposes? It is never easy to sort out the pros and cons but that is an excellent starting point to begin the search for the best vacuum. Because I own and operate a Pittsburgh house cleaning service, I have researched the market and spent many hours researching which machine would be the best. I wrote a list of what was important to me before researching what was available. I did not do the research because I love vacuum cleaners but instead because I use and depend on them every day in our cleaning business.

Basic Types of Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum cleaners come in two basic types as most people know an upright and a canister. In todayís market some vacuum cleaner companies make a backpack vacuum, which as the name suggests is a vacuum that straps to your back. A few home cleaning service companies use a backpack vacuum but that is not a usual choice for a home owners use. Why carry a vacuum on your back when there is no need to? My research brought to light one brand of vacuum that consistently scored higher than the rest and most of the time at the number one spot.

The Most Important Things to Look For

Running our Pittsburgh house cleaning service has many challenges. Purchasing the wrong vacuum cleaner could spell disaster for a home cleaning company. Several criteria were important to me after I thought about how we would be using our machines every day. These criteria list below may or may not be important to you. Take some time to think about your vacuuming needs and consider carefully what is important to you. High quality vacuum cleaners are not cheap but the investment is well spent if you think about what you need and what is important to you.

Does it Clean Well

First, the machine must do an excellent job picking up dirt, dust, and debris. As you can imagine, our customers would be upset if their floors were not clean after we completed our work. In general, vacuum machines have improved over time as far as their cleaning ability goes. However, there are still manufactures that produce machines that do not clean as well as they should. Most people think that the suction is the most important thing to consider when buying a vacuum cleaner. While suction is important the beater bar is more important. It is not the amount of air flow that removes the dirt from your carpet. In actuality, it is the beater bar which strikes the carpet releasing the dirt which is embedded in the fibers. The faster the bar and the more contact with the carpet the bar provides the better. Air driven beater bars are not as effective as electric driven beater bars. Also important to consider is the beater bar belt which is usually what drives or turns the beater bar. Flimsy belts are a poor choice for a machine. The best machines use gear belts. Gear belts, although more expensive, have the added advantage of much less breakage.

Will it Last a Long Time

Second, the machine should be durable and dependable. I have used machines that are a waste time because the belts break frequently or the hose clogs easily. Inexpensive machines do not last very long and come with useless guarantees. A cheap machine will cost more to repair than the original cost of the machine. An inexpensive machine is made with the idea that it is going to be put in the trash when it breaks and you, the home owner, will gladly purchase another machine like it. The trouble with this concept is you are always replacing belts and every six months or so having to spend the time and waste the money to start all over again. Machines with cheap plastic parts and covers are going to break, you can count on it. The cheaply made hoses will tear or bend and crimp easily making the machine totally useless. Inexpensive machines come with the conventional 90 day guarantee which will only cover some items on the machine. More expensive machines will come with longer guarantees, some as long as 5 years on major parts such as the motor. Any vacuum cleaner manufacturer that gives this kind of 5 year guarantee is confident that their product is going to last a long time if used properly.

Are You in it for the Exercise

Third, the vacuum must be light. Home cleaning is a physically challenging endeavor especially when doing several homes in a day. Usually, cleaning the floor is the most physical part of our daily work. Many machines seem to have been built as though we humans have unlimited strength! When purchasing your new vacuum cleaner, donít just push it on the floor to get a feel for it. Remember, if you live in a home that has more than one level you will be lifting the machine up a set of stairs. The designers put little or no thought went into how difficult it would be to lift the heavy machine they built to the second and third floors. Even if you are just pushing a heavy vacuum around from room to room it can be an energy waster if the machine is too heavy. Back injuries and back in general should be a high priority for everybody. Why choose a heavy machine when a lighter one will do just a good of a job.

How Easy is it to Operate

Forth, ease of use was important to me. Bending over to wrap a cord up every time you are done is not what I would consider for a vacuum cleaner as easy to use, especially when there are other options available. Switches located in hard to reach places that require bending over do little to calm your nerves when you are undertaking the job of vacuuming your carpet. Some machines do not allow for storing the various attachments on the machine which means you must usually stop the machine then take unwanted steps to locate the tool attachment you need for the job at hand. This amounts to wasted time and energy. This may not seem like much to consider but consider the time and energy wasted over a 15 year period to gain some perspective. Machines that allow for automatic rewind of the cord, have storage capacity for tools on the machine itself, and have switches that are easily located and easy to reach are what I would consider when ease of use it important.

Does it Promote a Healthy Environment

Fifth, good vacuums come with a HEPA filter. Although your investment will be greater if you purchase a vacuum with true HEPA filtration, the extra money will be well spent. Those who suffer from asthma or allergies will notice the most benefit. If you so suffer from asthma or allergies a HEPA filter will keep your air clean enabling you to breathe much easier. I can still remember as a child the smell of dirt and dust in the air after mom was done vacuuming around our home. Back in those days HEPA filtration was unheard of. Any vacuum that does not have HEPA filtration will create more dust particles in the air. All professional house cleaning service companies use machines with true HEPA filtration.
